Iran finally shot at the US Navy. It picked the hull with nobody on it

Iran had gone 73 recorded attacks without once targeting an American ship. The IRGC says it has now hit one, and that it was remotely operated.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps says that before dawn today it fired on an American military vessel approaching the Strait of Hormuz. In the 73 attacks this site's incident record attributes to Iran since the crisis opened, not one had a US ship as its target. The first that does, on Tehran's own account, had nobody aboard: three separate wire items describe a remotely operated, unmanned boat. None of it is confirmed by anyone but Iran. What can be checked is the record it breaks.

That record runs from 28 February to 14 August and holds 120 incidents, 73 of them Iranian: 69 attacks on ships and four on shore targets. Exactly one of the 69 was a warship, and it was Kuwait's — struck on 14 July, four sailors injured. The nearest Iran came to an American hull at sea was a US-flagged products tanker set alight alongside in Bahrain on 2 March. Killing Americans was never the line: six US Army reservists died in the drone strike on Port Shuaiba on the second day of the war. Firing on a ship of the US Navy was.

Tehran had promised it would. On 3 August a senior adviser to the supreme leader warned that if Washington sent warships to force open a second corridor through the strait, “even if they deploy warships, we will target them.” Thirty-four days later the thing targeted has no crew — and the wire cannot agree how large to make it. One Tasnim item announces Aerospace Force and Navy attacks on “US warships and vessels”; the three items that actually describe an engagement all describe the same single remote-controlled boat.

The vocabulary around it belongs to a coast guard, not a navy. The IRGC says the boat was attempting to enter “the protected zone of the Strait of Hormuz” — a phrase that appears nowhere in the 149 statements logged here before today — and the same morning it published, for the first time, footage of its surveillance and action against “violating vessels”. Set beside the transit fees parliament approved on 23 August and the strait authority's blacklist, updated on 3 September, this is a state asserting jurisdiction over a waterway and enforcing it on a trespasser. An unmanned intruder is the ideal defendant: it can be fired on without killing anyone.

What has changed is the rung, not the damage. There is now a demonstration that Iranian fire reaches American hulls in the strait, bought at a price both sides can walk away from, and the question for the next one is whether it has a crew. Oil will not answer it. This site found on 4 September that the only Hormuz news Brent still moves on is an American airstrike on Iranian ground, and an Iranian shot at an unmanned boat is not in that channel. Nothing here has been priced in any case: the last official close in this record is $96.02 on 1 September, up 7.0% on the day, and it printed before the Kharg strike and before this.

The incident file behind the counts runs 28 February to 14 August, its last date, so an Iranian attack on a US vessel in the three weeks since would not yet appear in it. Warship here means a naval vessel of any state; the four shore targets were US positions at Port Shuaiba and in the Gulf states, the Ras Tanura refinery and the Ras Laffan LNG port.
